How to Shop and Donate Safely

The holiday season usually means an uptick in online shopping and charitable donations.  Here are some easy ways you can stay safe this holiday season…

Online Shopping:

  • When shopping online opt to pay with a credit card. Credit cards have an extra layer of protection against fraudulent charges. Never comply with a seller that asks you to buy gift cards as their form of payment.

  • Never store your debit or credit card information in your Internet browser.  Also, try to limit the number of sites where you store payment information.

  • Be sure to keep your computer and smart phone up to date with the latest operating system, internet browser(s), and security software.

  • Most modern web browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari will help you stay safe online, but they're not foolproof.  Browsers will often block or warn you about websites that are not secure. Internet browsers may also block or warn you about sites that are known for malware, phishing, or social engineering.

  • Instead of clicking directly through an email or text message that you receive, open your Internet browser and navigate to the store’s website directly. It’s also prudent to avoid clicking through advertisements found on social media sites. This simple practice will ensure you never get duped by a fake email, fake text message, or malicious advertisement.

  • As a general rule, try to avoid websites that you are unfamiliar with. If you must buy from an unfamiliar site, please take time to research the validity of the site first.  You can verify the padlock icon in the address bar, check Google’s Transparency Report, and read reviews online from sites like the Better Business Bureau, Google, or Yelp.

  • Finally, if an online shopping deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. When something doesn’t feel right, stop and talk to a friend or family member. Often a second set of eyes can help you avoid falling victim to a scam.

Charitable Donations:

  • Avoid making donations over the phone; especially if you did not initiate the call.

  • Don’t be rushed to make a donation.  Anyone that is pressuring you to make a donation on the spot should be considered suspicious.

  • Instead, take time to research the charity before making a donation.  These websites can help you make an informed decision:
  • It is generally best to make donations online with a credit card or by sending a check by mail.  Follow the steps above to verify the website is safe.  Verify the mailing address of the charity for yourself.
