Essay Topic & College Scholarship Application

The 2022 application period is now closed!

Below is the topic for our 2022 Dollars for Scholars Scholarship essay.  In 500 to 1,000 words, please answer the following questions:

"Congrats, you landed your first real job making $40,000/year.  How do you budget for everything you need?  Such as an apartment, utilities, student loans, groceries and other living expenses.  Do research and base your answers on the average costs in the area you want to live."


  • Applicant must be a high school senior bound for college or a vocational school
  • Applicant must be a member in Grand Rapids, Lansing and other parts of Michigan or be related to a member of Adventure Credit Union with membership affiliation of at least one year prior to application
  • Entry is by essay that explains the full meaning of the chosen topic
  • Essays must be between 500-1000 words
  • Scholarship entry is available online only
  • Four winners will be chosen and scholarships of (2) $1,000 and (2) $500 will be awarded.
  • The amount of the scholarship award will be paid to the recipient to provide financial assistance in their pursuit of an undergraduate degree at an accredited trade school, college, or university.
  • Winners will be selected by an independent committee.

  • Essays must be between 500-1000 words
  • Winners will be selected by an independent committee.
  • The scholarship committee’s principal determining factor in selecting award recipients is the applicant’s passion for the topic.
  • The committee will use the following criteria in judging responses to the topic: comprehension of subject, organization, language use, originality, clarity, spelling and grammar. Scholarship recipients will be selected without regard to their race, religion or gender.
  • Entry deadline for 2022 is March 31, 2022. Scholarship entry is available online only.
